Something fun to do…

So, being in a relationship for almost four years now, it is amazing how we are always finding out new stuff about each other (and the fact that we aren’t bored with each other also surprises us.) I have realized that relationships only work if you are really good friends. And I have been incredibly blessed with a significant other that just happens to fill that best friend spot perfectly. It was almost like he was made for it. But, anyways, I digress. What I really wanted to share with you today is a new idea I came up with. Well, it kind of just happened. In fact, I probably have to give partial credit to my boyfriend, darn. Anyways, I have read a TON of blogs/articles about relationships. Everyone has their ideas of how to “spice” up relationships and what not, and to be honest, a lot of the time it is ridiculousness. I know some people probably genuinely need advice on what to do on a Saturday night, but I feel like if someone else tells me what I should do with my boyfriend on a Saturday night, it ruins it for me. I know we have had plenty moments of:

“What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know, what do you want to do?”

“I don’t know.”

etc.

We have ALL been there, whether it was with a spouse, significant other, family member, or a friend. But, I have NEVER had fun looking up things to do on the internet. Typing in “what to do when you’re bored” in google never really helped us much; although it was a good laugh. We usually end up doing something we come up with on our own that suits us better.

Soooo, that being said, I do have an idea that I think was pretty cool. We were in the public library the other day and my boyfriend really wanted me to read a series of children’s novels that he read when he was young. Then I thought, “well, I really want him to read some of my childhood favorites too.” LIGHTBULB! Swapping your favorite childhood books with your S.O. (significant other) or friend is an awesome idea (or at least I thought so). I had so much fun reading his favorite books, it was an insight into his past that I never got to see before, AND it was a very light read that was just plain enjoyable. I actually wanted to keep reading them rather than my more serious “grown-up” novels. It was a part of each other’s past that we now knew and could share together. All in all, I thought it was a really fun thing to do together. I would be reading his book and he would end up reading it with me over my shoulder, and vice-versa, when he read mine I ended up reading along with him.

Even though I am so anti giving relationship advice, I thought this was pretty nifty and worthy of sharing (I’ll let you be the judge.) It was really fun for us and something completely new.

I began the Merlin series and I made him read The Giver.

And if you don’t have anyone to share with? No problem. You can just read your old favorites again or if you have a child, read your favorites to them. And if someone has already thought of this, double darn (that always happens to me).
